About

My name is Jason, I’m an architectural graduate and interaction design researcher specialising in spatial aware and responsive technology.  I’ve created real-time responsive, interactive installations and constructed architectural spaces, all with the desire to engage people with the places they inhabit.  My design research is in opening up the overlap between the design of physical spaces, interaction systems and software which allow conversant architectures. Previously I’ve also taught design, interaction and construction in both the Bachelor and  Master of Architecture programs at UTS, teaching primarily in the Computational Environments course.

My work has been exhibited in Edinburgh, London, Pittsburgh and Sydney including the Edinburgh University Architecture gallery, Tap Gallery and Customs House, Sydney.Up until recently I’ve been a design researcher at the University of Technology, Sydney, undertaking a Ph.D in spatial interaction with Bert Bongers as my supervisor. Lately, however I’ve been working with some pretty stellar people at Arup in Sydney, working with Dan Hill and Michelle Tabet as a designer in the relatively new realm of urban informatics. This role allows me to expand my exploration of the digital/physical overlap in the built environment, in the context of the real world (read: real projects, clients, briefs, budgets and all of those wonderful things), something I’ve found extremely rewarding.

I’ll be posting bits and pieces here when I can, but if you’re really keen you can find my work at Arup over at urban-informatics.net.

The rest of my online facets can also be found via twitter, last.fm and flickr.  Feel free to drop me a line if you’ve discovered another, or if you’d like to get in touch.  contact [at] jasonmcdermott.net.
