progress reporting

Lately I’ve been working my way through an academic requirement for all phd students at UTS, which involves submitting a progress reports on my work each and every semester. These reports are essentially a simple 4-page form but require an appended (also 4 page) report outlining what you set out to do, what you [...]

Phidget Interface Kit + Processing

Here’s a simple example for connecting a PhidgetInterfaceKit 8/8/8 to a computer, using Processing.
You will need to download the phidget21.jar package from the phidgets website, find it in the ‘Programming’ section in the java examples section.  Once downloaded, just use Sketch>Add File… to add the file to your sketch.  Connect via USB and you’re ready [...]

Phidget Servo motor output via Processing

I’m currently preparing for a short piece of processing tutoring in the Bachelor of Architecture course, commencing tomorrow.  The course is a 1st year construction subject, in which the year group is designing modular structures from found objects (read; whatever they can find in large amounts at Reverse Garbage), with a  12-15 unsuspecting students are [...]

fluid updated

I’ve spent a bit more time cleaning up the fluid blobs examples I made last week, this time limiting the Region of Interest and fiddling with the fluid interaction.  Also newly included is a smarter way to interact with the blobs (in the code, i mean), pulling out more precise locational data.  I’ll be looking [...]

fluid blobs

Linked below are some early results from a new series of sketches I’ve been working on using Processing.  These sketches continue in a long line of projects I’ve completed recently using simple camera tracking algorithms to infer interesting patterns of movement in urban spaces.
The first example is a calibrated blob tracking experiment, using the excellent [...]

Janus (development)

As part of the Smart Light Sydney Festival, May 2009, Tom Barker (Professor of Design, Architecture and Innovation at UTS) and Hank Haeusler (Post-Doctoral Researcher at UTS) were commissioned to design and produce an interactive light sculpture to be exhibited on the light walk in the Rocks.  The piece conceived by Tom was called Janus [...]

cityscapers

Interface Edinburgh was produced by Rangituhia Hollis, Jason McDermott and Athalie Moedjoko.  It was the culmination of the two week porosity studio in Edinburgh, and has been exhibited in Edinburgh, London and Sydney.
Interface: Edinburgh
The interface only exists between a body and it’s environment.
Come to this place and see that we are outsiders, foreigners in a [...]

Ihardlyknowher Flickr Viewer

Ihardlyknowher Flickr Viewer , originally uploaded by jason.mcdermott.
Above is a screenshot of my flickr viewer made possible by ihardlyknowher, a flickr-API application developed by Justin Ouellette, who also happens to have been behind the very cool muxtape and (worked at) vimeo.  The site description reads;
‘If your Flickr URL is flickr.com/photos/yourname,
find yourself at ihardlyknowher.com/yourname’
Ihardlyknowher is a [...]

Interface Edinburgh

The interface only exists between a body and it’s environment.
Come to this place and see that we are outsiders, foreigners in a new land‚ naive and blissfully innocent of this place.   We seek to make a connection, an understanding, to learn from the city by touch and by feel.  By striking, pulling and tearing.  Each [...]

pixeltag update

The pixeltag project has progressed once again;
* the interface has been amended slightly to allow for yaw input (not just roll) as the ‘x’ axis data,
* the ‘cursor’ item has been implemented, allowing the user to see where they are about to draw prior to doing so,
* The up/down ratios have been adjusted to allow [...]

project ideas

Lately there have been many ideas/thoughts flying around regarding potential project outcomes for my fledgeline Ph.D. research.
I wanted to get some of them out into the blogosphere, so I can get them out of my head and into some kind of intelligent format.  So here goes;
bus tracker
Web based interface for seeing real-time locations of buses [...]

wii testing

As part of my research into interactive architecture, I have come across some very interesting ideas for designing and implementing feedback interfaces.
One such idea was embedded in the wii remote, as discussed in an earlier post on the pixeltag project. Another such test we worked on in the interactivation lab is the connection of [...]
