Yesterday I jotted down a few thoughts about the apparent and impending future of YouTube. One thing I neglected to mention specifically was the one thing I was actually writing about in the first place – brand engagement. It’s the special sauce that makes things like YouTube run. Forget your utopian dreams of sharing videos or things between friends, this place is where people engage with the brands they love. Or something. It seems to be everywhere, lurking just beneath the surface. Awareness, market saturation, x is better than y, we seem so happy to play along. It’s appalling. The New Yorker has seen the future of youtube, and it’s not what you thought it would look like.   Google is shifting gears quite rapidly, moving the focus away from user generated content to studio-produced shows & movies – even channels created solely for youtube itself. It’s a revenue driven set of decisions seeking to wrest some of the profits from the incumbent tv channels.  The claim is that tv audiences watch up to several hours of tv a night, where YouTube audiences watch only a matter of minutes, and that can be changed by adding a number of things; higher relevance for linked material (by algorithms), channel content such as shows or movies, and content created exclusively for YouTube.  It would seem…

As a relative latecomer to the twitter-verse, this post may seem a little bit behind the times, but there are some ideas that have been floating around the web over the last month, and I want to add my 2 cents to the discussion.It would appear that in the last 5 years there have been many advances in communication technology that have had a measurable impact on the way political campaigns have been able to run.  With the advent of web 2.0 styled applications and information sharing tools (such as facebook, delicious or digg), more information can be spread, discussed and analysed in increasingly short periods of time.
